Summary
Currently, Anandia Labs has an opening for a full time position as Plant Tissue Culture Technician to work with other Anandia scientists to maintain Anandia Labs’ plant tissue culture collection, including cultures from internal research projects and external contract clients. The Plant Tissue Culture Technician will be involved in all aspects of plant tissue culture including initiating cultures from non-sterile tissue, preparing media, transferring cultures and developing new tissue culture approaches. The successful candidate will provide a high level of technical expertise and actively participate with other staff to complete projects and contracts in an effective and timely manner.
Responsibilities:
- Perform plant tissue culture procedures using aseptic techniques in a clean work environment
- Maintain and expand collection by preparing plant material for in-vitro tissue cultures and performing routine micropropagation
- Prepare and follow a schedule for micropropagation, with consideration of number of plants required, stocks and media requirements
- Organize tissue culture supplies and monitor inventory
- Prepare stock solutions
- Prepare, dispense and autoclave media
- Monitor overall health and level of contamination in culture collection
- Troubleshoot when necessary to optimize culture growth and address problems immediately to reduce contamination
- Record data in laboratory notebooks and computer databases
- Comply with safety and other regulatory standards
- Contribute to overall lab organization and tidiness
- Perform cleaning and calibration of lab equipment (autoclave, pH meter, biosafety cabinet, etc.)
- Clean labware, empty and wash tissue culture jars and utensils, autoclave waste
- Other related duties as assigned
Qualification Requirements
- Minimum Bachelors of Science in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biology, Cell Biology with three (3) years of experience
- Strong aseptic techniques and practical experience working in sterile environment
- Experience with media preparation
- Knowledge of plant tissue culture, with focus on plant micropropagation techniques is an asset
- Ability to perform daily repetitive tasks using hand manipulations
- Excellent organizational, multi-tasking and problem solving skills
- Self-motivated, creative individual able to work in a team environment
- Strong written and oral communications skills
- Must pass a RCMP Criminal Records Check
- Good computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office
