Summary
Anandia has an opening for a full-time position as a Plant Breeding Technician to work with Anandia scientists to advance the company’s plant breeding objectives. The Plant Breeding Technician will be involved in all aspects of plant breeding, including growing and maintaining plants, performing crosses, recording phenotypic data and carrying out experiments. The successful candidate will provide a high level of technical expertise and actively participate with other staff to complete projects in an effective and timely manner.
Responsibilities
The major responsibilities for the role of Plant Breeding Technician will include, but are not
limited to:
• Cultivate plants and ensure optimal growth from seeding to harvest
• Conduct and manage greenhouse and growth chamber experiments
• Recognize and control plant diseases and pests
• Mix and apply fertilizers / hydroponic nutrients as required
• Organize plant cultivation supplies, including washing of pots and trays
• Manage (clean, count and catalogue) seed inventory
• Prepare and follow schedule for growing, treating and crossing plants as well as conduct experiments under direction from Anandia’s Plant Breeder
• Record data in laboratory notebooks and computer databases
• Analyze data and compile research reports
• Comply with safety and other regulatory standards
• Contribute to overall lab organization and tidiness
• Other related duties as assigned
• Preparing plant samples for analysis
Qualification Requirements
• Minimum of a Bachelors of Science in Biology, Genetics, or Horticulture, or a Bachelors of Agriculture or related discipline, with at least three (3) years of work experience
• Understanding of plant life cycle, plant health and care
• Experience with experimental design and execution
• Understanding of genetics and plant breeding
• Ability and willingness to perform daily repetitive tasks
• Excellent organizational, multi-tasking and problem solving skills
• Self-motivated, creative individual able to work in a team environment
• Strong written and oral communications skills
• Good computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Must be able to pass a RCMP Criminal Records Check
Start date and location:
The start date for this position is June 2018 (or earlier if possible). The Plant Breeding Technician will be initially be located at Anandia’s UBC facility and will transition to our Vancouver Island site (Comox) in early 2019.
